www.abi.com.pl So as I am going along, I am passing some beautiful landscapes, and also signs that there are Elephants here!!!
Some days I have had to travel more kilometers than I had expected because the information about the water on the way is not so reliable but at least it is an adventure, hey??
Once after a less fortuitous reconnaissance trip I was going really far and after dark I had to knock on somebody's door! Luckily, the person who opened it was really friendly. He was a father of 3 and taking care of them by himself and the farm while his wife was away working in a Lodge around 70 km away from them.
I was surprised to see how caring he was and how everything was taken care of so well. I wouldn't ordinarily expect that from a man.
You can see him and his kids on one of my photographs.
He was also able to tell me detailed information about the road and where I could expect to collect more water along the way.
The next day I got to Panenwag. It is a place smaller than anybody would expect. Literally there was just one shop, a petrol station and a big government run Lodge for tourists.
Before heading off I took the time to clean up my bike and fill my tyres with air.
People were warning me that further on the road I might find wild Elephants and it might be dangerous. More concerning is that there are also rhinos and lions which I should be the most careful around.
As the day was still hot and there was still good riding conditions I was really eager to go further. I went on full of optimism.
Some cars were passing me by and I got the impression that none of them was really surprised to see me there, bolstering my enthusiasm. So, on I went, and after some 15 km I came across some giraffes, a lot of them, and then a few kilometers along were some wild elephants! Luckily, they were quite far from the road and weren't really interested in me. Good luck, at least, as I was really keen to take a good photo of them. After watching them and observing that they were unperturbed by my presence, I continued on past them and went on further down the road.
Just cycling along from one dry river bed to another, sometimes even passing water I started to think that if all of these wild animals were so plentiful here it is likely that I might come across the king of forest, the mighty lions!!
With this thought in mind I became quite anxious and the adrenaline pushed me to pass through this area through to a place where hopefully the risk of coming across a hungry predator would be smaller.
Luckily, as the sun was setting I managed to reach a human settlement and spent my night in this wilderness area in relative safety. All the while, as I was sleeping under the stars I was also making sure that the snoring of my neighbours was not a lion's roar!
