The last stretch to Opuwo was really easy, more green, more villages with some local food to eat. My favorite food here is the fat cakes and grilled meat, all washed down with sour milk.
Opuwo appears to be just as described by people along my journey! "Real Africa" in Namibia.
Many local tribes, people walking on the street in their traditional dresses. You can find Herero, Himba and Zimba people here, and probably more!! It is an amazing place which reminds me of Luang Namtha in Laos. Unusual, a time capsule from a previous era!!
The local traditions are practiced still and people are not surprised to be sitting next to a beautiful topless girl in the pub or restaurant. This is their everyday dress, or rather lack of them.
The first thing I did was to get something to eat and there was a large choice of small or larger restaurants. Most of them have the same type of food. Fat cakes and grilled meat. Sometimes some tomato and onion salad, or pasta with cabbage.
The food is cheap and good. I fill up my stomach quite well, but the next day after tasting some local beer I got sick and had diarrhea and vomiting all evening. It was full on!!!
However, after recovering the next day I had a big surprise because, when I was cycling around the town and shopping around for supplies for the next 3 days journey to Epupa Falls, I met up with the Afryka Nowaka team!! I had been chasing them all the way from Orang River! Their support crew were off moving the bikes and the rest of their equipment to the next destination on the Angolan border, and so now they were enjoying some sightseeing on their own.
It was a big surprise for all of us! We spent the rest of that day together chatting and exchanging information.
We also camped together out from the town and had a great time around the fire with cold beer and funny stories to tell. I really enjoyed that evening despite my lingering dysentery symptoms!
The next afternoon they had to depart for their trip back south, and I set out the following morning to Epupa.
