www.abi.com.pl Well, for this part of my trip I have travelled on the bike along the beautiful coast from Cape Town around to Cape Agulhas! Despite my lack of training, it really wasn't so bad!!!
There has been a lot of wind to deal with but a good taste of Africa with its extensive National Parks, long gravel roads and European style small villages.
From Cape Town I had a good back wind so I have just sprinted to Overburg with its rolling hills and farms for miles. Just like in the Polish Mazury District.
At night I stayed on farms where I was greeted with the amazing Boerer hospitality - delicious food and lovely gardens where I could pitch my tent.
South African and Namibian properties I have found are fully fenced so it is hard to find a nice place to camp. The only choice I have had was to just ask each farm along the way fpr permission to camp on their property. Usually they have been OK with that. So far my luck continues!
From the rolling hills of Overburg I arrived in Worcester with its vineyards, orchards, dry weather and beautiful scenery. Another European/New Zealand looking Africa.
From time to time I have passed some black locals living in shacks or a one room clay house with a big chimney. Of course the nice big houses are owned by white farmers.
After passing through Worcester, the serious climbing began. I had to go over 3 mountain passes of which two of them really gave me a hard time.
Duiring these first few days, my body started giving me signs that I should take a break. The last time I was cycling seriously was 4 years ago. I had some awful pain in my knees, less blood pressure in my hands which affects all kinds of simple tasks I was to find out! Simple camping tasks I was doing and even writing on the computer started causing me huge pain in my muscles.
My heart was just pumping all of my blood to my legs so they felt like stones.
Despite these initial hurdles the heat and weather have been my biggest cause for concern but it seems it was all nothing compared to what I was to face further north...
