When I was leaving Chingola I was in a very confused state of mind, because I was very keen to go through the Democratic Republic of Congo but wasn't sure if I could do it by myself because of the safety issues. So, I decided to find somebody to join and go together. I searched all kinds of sites on the Internet. It wasn't easy, and as I was going down the road I thought that in such a short period of time it would be rather impossible.
And then, as I was cycling down the road 40 km from Chingola I saw a man on his bike approaching me!! I think, 'No way it's not possible!', but it was true and when I stopped him to ask where he was going, the answer was the Democratic Republic of Congo!! Hee hee! His name was Mark Reechard. He was french, around 51 years old. His bike was also old, a classic racing bike with tyres for tar roads. I was thinking that with that bike in the DRC he would have some problems!
We spoke a moment and he agreed for me to join him but there was one problem- I didn't have a visa. So he went on and I was supposed to catch up with him after securing a visa.
We separated and I went down to Nola where there was a consulate for DRC and he went to Chingola.
Unfortunately I didn't get anything in that place and had to go straight to Lusaka.
On the way I stoped in Kapiri Imposhi in a mission run by a very smiley sister from Poland who runs the school there.
I got my visa in Lusaka very quickly and came back by bus the same day. In between I have been calabraiting my 30 birsday!!!!
Early the next morning I jumped on my bike and went as fast as possible to Chingola but it was to late. Mark Reachard had already set off. Since I wasn't sure if I would get the visa I couldn't keep him waiting.
I had now 3 days distance to make up and not a clue as to what would be awaiting me in DRC... but I decided to go and chase my companion!
So then off I go.......
